The Cmaj7 in the verses is better than the C. I would even play a Cmaj9.

I think there is a D7 chord before each chorus.

...replace Cmaj7 with Cadd9...that's an added d note...

...the 1st note of the melody...

...especially if your singer is a little shaky...
