The main progression for the INTRO and VERSE of the song goes like
this??
Use a 1st finger barre at 2nd fret, move (not slide) it up to 4th fret.
When you play it with the song, you'll get the feel of it:

The '^' means hammer on the first time, and pull off the second time.
When pulling off, sort of flick the B string so it rings clearly.

Where's the slide on the A-String at the start that I hear (and throughout the verses)? And aren't there two guitars? I hear one at a whole ovtave higher than what you posted. And what about the pattern during the chorus? You've included the lyrics, which is nice, but you're missing other things. Good structure and well explained but it seems incomplete. *** to even out the *****. Correct the tab before somebody posts another and you just might have a great tab.

This is the main part Tom played, the second guitar (Mike's part) was a small-body Rickenbacker 12-string, which adds the fullness of a second guitar, plus the sound of a guitar being played an octave higher and natural chorusing. Basically the person who made this tab should label it as Tom's part.

There's a Youtube video - search for "Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Classic Albums: Damn The Torpedoes, The Rickenbacker 12-string" to see how Mike played his parts. The guitar story is very interesting as well. :D
