I think the tuning is perfect; those strings need to be played open. After watching all of his live performances of this song, there's something he's doing that I don't see anybody doing on covers, which is playing the 3rd string with his index finger in between the major notes of the main riff, and probably for most of the rest of the song. You can see his index finger plodding along the entire time.
