Ventura Highway chords
America 1972 (Dewey Bunnell)

Capo II

F Em* 5x

F
Chewing on a piece of grass,
                 Em*
walking down the road
F Em*
Tell me, how long you gonna stay here, Joe?
F Em*
Some people say this town don't look good in snow
F Em*
You don't care, I know

F Em
Ventura Highway, in the sunshine
          F
Where the days are longer,
                             Em
the nights are stronger than moonshine
F Em G
You're gonna go, I know

           F Em
'Cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair,
        F Em
and the days surround your daylight there
F Em
Seasons crying no despair,
F Em G F
alligator lizards in the air, in the air

Em
Did dit dit dit dit, did dit dit dit dit
F
Did dit dit dit dit, did dit dit dit dit
Em
Did dit dit dit dit, did dit dit dit dit

F
Wishin' on a falling star,
                Em
waitin' for the early train
F Em
Sorry boy, but I've been hit by purple rain
F Em
Aw, come on, Joe, you can always change your name
F Em
Thanks a lot, son, just the same

F Em
Ventura Highway, in the sunshine
          F
Where the days are longer,
                             Em
the nights are stronger than moonshine
F Em G
You're gonna go, I know

           F Em
'Cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair,
        F Em
and the days surround your daylight there
F Em
Seasons crying no despair,
F Em G F
alligator lizards in the air, in the air

Em
Did dit dit dit dit, did dit dit dit dit
F
Did dit dit dit dit, did dit dit dit dit
Em
Did dit dit dit dit, did dit dit dit dit
F
Did dit dit dit dit, did dit dit dit dit . . .

* Cmaj7 chord is a very good substitution for Em

I prefer to play this in G with no capo, the chords are still very simple.
But in your key I would play Cmaj7 instead of the Em's.

At the end of the second verse, instead of G, I'd play an Em11, or Esus7, (010100) whatever you want to call it, it's the same shape.

In the third verse, instead of F and Em, I'd play Dm7 to Em7
I wouldn't play the G you have in the last line, and I'd end on Fmaj7 instead of the F.
They're all subtle chord differences but that's what's key to 'America's smooth harmony sound, those major and minor 7th's.

Thanks again,

Good try but this tab is completely wrong. The original is in the key of G for starters ... and to try to play this song using F and Em all the way through is just completely wrong. With all due respects dude it should be withdrawn as it is totally wrong and therefore useless. Only the words are correct.
