[Verse 1]

D Dmaj7
'Twas in another lifetime,
Dsus4 D
One of toil and blood.
                     Dmaj7
When blackness was a virtue
         Dsus4
And the road was full of mud.
       D Dmaj7
I came in from the wilderness,
    Dsus4
A creature void of form.
      D
"Come in" she said,
      Dmaj7
"I'll give you,
Dsus4 D
Shelter from the storm."

Dmaj7 Dsus4 D
D Dmaj7 Dsus4 D

[Verse 2]

         D Dmaj7
And if I pass this way again,
Dsus4 D
You can rest assured,
                  Dmaj7
I'll always do my best for her
   Dsus4
On that I give my word.
     D Dmaj7
In a world of steel eyed death and men
        Dsus4
Who are fighting to be warm,
     D
Come in she said,
      Dmaj7
I'll give you
Dsus4 D
Shelter from the storm.

Dmaj7 Dsus4 D

[Verse 3]

      D Dmaj7
Not a word was spoke between us.
          Dsus4 D
There was little risk involved.
                  Dmaj7
everything up to that point,
         Dsus4
Had been left unresolved.
D Dmaj7
Try imagining a place
           Dsus4
Where it's always safe and warm
     D
Come in she said
      Dmaj7
I'll give you
Dsus4 D
Shelter from the storm.

Dmaj7 Dsus4 D
D Dmaj7 Dsus4 D

[Verse 4]

D Dmaj7
I was burned out from exhaustion
      Dsus4 D
I was buried in the hail.
                Dmaj7
Poisoned in the bushes
          Dsus4
An' blown out on the trail
D Dmaj7
Hunted like a crocodile,
  Dsus4
Ravaged in the corn
     D
Come in she said
      Dmaj7
I'll give you
Dsus4 D
Shelter from the storm.

Dmaj7 Dsus4 D
D Dmaj7 Dsus4 D

[Verse 5]

D Dmaj7
Suddenly I turned around
    Dsus4 D
And she was standing there
                      Dmaj7
With silver bracelets on her wrists
    Dsus4
And flowers in her hair.
    D Dmaj7
She walked up to me so gracefully
    Dsus4
And took my crown of thorns
     D
Come in she said
      Dmaj7
I'll give you,
Dsus4 D
Shelter from the storm.

Dmaj7 Dsus4 D
D Dmaj7 Dsus4 D

[Verse 6]

D Dmaj7
Now there's a wall between us
Dsus4 D
Something has been lost.
                    Dmaj7
I took too much for granted
   Dsus4
I got my signals crossed
D Dmaj7
Just to think that it all began
      Dsus4
On an uneventful morn
     D
Come in she said
      Dmaj7
I'll give you
Dsus4 D
Shelter from the storm.

Dmaj7 Dsus4 D
D Dmaj7 Dsus4 D

[Verse 7]

          D Dmaj7
Well, the deputy walks on hard nails
        Dsus4 D
And the preacher rides a mount
                   Dmaj7
But nothing really matters
     Dsus4
It's doom alone that counts
        D Dmaj7
And the one-eyed undertaker
   Dsus4
He blows a futile horn
     D
Come in she said
      Dmaj7
I'll give you
Dsus4 D
Shelter from the storm.

Dmaj7 Dsus4 D
D Dmaj7 Dsus4 D

[Verse 8]

D Dmaj7
I've heard newborn babies wailin'
Dsus4 D
Like a mornin' dove
                 Dmaj7
And old men with broken teeth
   Dsus4
Stranded without love.
     D Dmaj7
Do I understand your question, man
      Dsus4
Is it hopeless and forlorn.
     D
Come in she said
      Dmaj7
I'll give you
Dsus4 D
Shelter from the storm.

Dmaj7 Dsus4 D
D Dmaj7 Dsus4 D

[Verse 9]

     D Dmaj7
In a little hilltop village
  Dsus4 D
I gambled for my clothes
                   Dmaj7
I bargained for salvation
        Dsus4
And she gave me a lethal dose.
  D Dmaj7
I offered up my innocence
    Dsus4
And got repaid with scorn
     D
Come in she said
      Dmaj7
I'll give you
Dsus4 D
Shelter from the storm.

Dmaj7 Dsus4 D
D Dmaj7 Dsus4 D

[Verse 10]

          D Dmaj7
Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country
        Dsus4 D
But I'm bound to cross the line.
               Dmaj7
Beauty walks a razors edge,
    Dsus4
Someday I'll make it mine.
           D Dmaj7
If I could only turn back the clock
        Dsus4
To when God and her were born
     D
Come in she said
      Dmaj7
I'll give you
Dsus4 D
Shelter from the storm.

[Outro]

Although this sounds fine, I hear different notes in the chords. I'd suggest something like this (D-A-D-F#-A-D + capo 2nd fret): E 0-0-0-0-0-0 B(sus4/D#) x-4-2-3-0-0 A(/C#) x-2-0-1-2-0 / Asus2(/C#) x-2-0-1-0-0

Interesting but really needs to resolve to A on "shelter" (last line every time)

This is a great version... But Dylan tuned to DADF#AD and Capo'd 2nd Fret... To play the song in E. If you're in open E and Capo-2 you're actually in F
