[Verse 1]

D
I don't know what the world may need
       G
But I'm sure as hell that it starts with me
            Cadd9 G D
and that's a wisdom, I've laughed at
D
I don't know what the world may want
     G
but a good stiff drink it surely don't
     Cadd9 G D
so I think I'll go and fix myself a tall one.

[Chorus]

               D
'Cause what the world needs now
    Cadd9 G
is a new kind of tension
           Cadd9 G D
'cause the old one just bores me to death.

                D
'Cause what the world needs now
   Cadd9 G
is another folk singer
     Cadd9 G D
like I need a hole in my head.

[Verse 2]

D
I don't know what the world may need
       G
but a V-8 engine's a good start for me
            Cadd9 G D
think I'll drive and find a place to be surly.
D
I don't know what the world may want
         G
but some words of wisdom could comfort us
            Cadd9 G D
think I'll leave that up to someone wiser.

[Chorus]

                D
'Cause what the world needs now
         Cadd9 G
are some true words of wisdom
     Cadd9 G D
like la la la la la la la la la.
                D
'Cause what the world needs now
     Cadd9 G
is another folk singer
     Cadd9 G D
like I need a hole in my head.

[Verse 3]

D
I don't know what the world may need
       G
and I'll never grasp its complexities
            Cadd9 G D
I'd be happy just to get your attention
D
I don't know what the world may want
       G
but your long sweet body lying next to mine
            Cadd9 G D
could certainly... raise my spirits.

[Chorus]

         D
What the world needs now
     Cadd9 G
is a new Frank Sinatra
   Cadd9 G D
so I can get you in bed.

Oh, lyrics are off though in a couple places: In second verse, "new kind attention" is "new kind of tension" and after the solo, the part about leather dress is actually something like, "I may never know your complexities." The verb tense may be off (it may be "I'll never know your complexities" or something else like that).

I always got it as "new kind of tension" and it sound more in the mood of a teen
