the actual author of this song is Joe South ('Games People Play'), not Billy Joe Royal who did record a version of it though.

singing with a deep voice I try different keys. I figured a very easy way to play a rhythm for this song. I sing and play chords others can jump in at open mics and add keys, bass and lead guitar. my easy version has A7 as intro and backing theme of the song into......the NaNaNaNaaaa with F C G back to A7 extend A7 into verse leading with A7 variations throughout verse. Chorus with the NaNa section F C G back to A7 then do extended A7 variation with help from someone on keys, mouthharp bass etc, Chorus #2 A7 with Hush Hush to D thought I heard Her G calling my name now A7 Hush Hush.....she D broke my heart but G I love her just the same now....same chords. rest of song I just switch in my A7 and the rest. I put a verse and chord pattern on paper to practice with. Another friend of mine is going to lay on some mouth harp, other friends play the keys and bass. My favorite Deep Purple song written by the Great Joe South.
