I Sang Dixie
Dwight Yoakam

[Intro]
| E | B | E | E |

[Chorus]
E
I sang Dixie as he died
E E7
The people just walked on by as I cried
               A E
The bottle had robbed him of all his rebel pride
          E B7 E
So I sang Dixie as he died

[Verse 1]
E E/D# E/C# E/B
He said way down yonder in the land of cotton
A A/G# A/F# A/E
Ole times there ain't near as rotten as they are
E B7
On these damned ol' L.A. streets
E
Then he drew a dying breath
         A
Laid his head against my chest
          E B7
Oh please lord take his soul back
        E
Home to Dixie

[Chorus]
E
I sang Dixie as he died
E E7
The people just walked on by as I cried
               A E
The bottle had robbed him of all his rebel pride
          E B7 E
So I sang Dixie as he died

[Solo]
| E | E | E | E |
| E | E | E | E7 |
| A | A | E | E |
| E | B7 | E | E |

[Verse 2]
E
He said listen to me son while you still can
A
Run back home to that southern land
          E B7
Don’t you see what life here has done to me
E
Then he closed those old blue eyes
     A E
Fell limp against my side no more pain
         B7 E
Now he’s safe back home in Dixie

[Chorus]
E
I sang Dixie as he died
E E7
The people just walked on by as I cried
               A E
The bottle had robbed him of all his rebel pride
          E B7 E
So I sang Dixie as he died

[Ending]
          E B7 A E E A E
So I sang Dixie as he dieeeeed

I agree... This represents the best version to date. Thanks for taking the time to post it. To my novice ear, that last "A" chord in the ending sounds more like a "B7," though.
