                             Go By - Elliott Smith
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabbed by: ciaran rooney

Tuning: DGCFAD

From "New Moon", disk one. It's played in D tuning (DGCFAd), as in tuned down a full step.
For simplicity the chords are treated as if it was in standard (EADGBe)

The intro is based around E major, you play the bottom string parts with your baby finger

d|---2--2--O-----2--3--O----------------------------------------------|
A|---O-----------O----------------------------------------------------|
F|---1-----------1----------------------------------------------------|
C|--------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|--------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-O----------O-------------------------------------------------------|

Here's the chords.
Note the F#/D is a transition from G down to Em (and C, sometimes).
It's like this:

d|-------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|--3----------------------------------------------------------------|
F|--2----------------------------------------------------------------|
C|--O----------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--2----------------------------------------------------------------|

Likewise when moving back and forth from A to C in the prechorus you
transition via a B bass note.

E G

.. Go on parade and fade
F#/D C
Hit the ceiling slow
G F#/D Em
Spending all your time with some girl
        D C
You'll never get to know
G F#/D C
Wound up tight
G Em
Dressed all in white
     D A
Some torment saint
                 C
Blowing out to drift
A C D
 ... Leave you even if

G Em
You live up in your head
F#/D C
Scared of every little noise
G F#/D Em
Someone's always breaking in accidentally
         D C
Using nothing but their voice
G F#/D C
Shrill and small
G Em
Echo down the hall
D A
Repeating pet names
                    C
Seeing it in your eyes
A C
... You're only passing by

Chorus:

You're going up half-steps from the C all the way to Em.
The C#dim has this shape:

d|-------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|--5----------------------------------------------------------------|
F|--4----------------------------------------------------------------|
C|--5----------------------------------------------------------------|
G|--4----------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-------------------------------------------------------------------|

Then your D will be a bar chord with 5th fret second string as bass note,
then the D#dim is just the C#dim shape above moved up two frets (6th fret bass note)
so your Em will have the 7th fret as your bass note.

C#dim D D# Em
. . . . . . . Go by
C#dim D5 (slide to) E5 C B
 ... Go by

E G
Someone's in the way
        F#/D C
Pretty words and inside slurs
G
All the things they have to say
F#/D Em C
To perform the work that they've rehearsed
G F#/D C
It's a waste of time
G Em
I put it behind me
D A
Once and for all
                 C
And let the hype decline
A C
.. If the problem wasn't mine

Repeat chorus, finish on C

Here's some of the lead guitar parts which play over the verse.

.. Spending all your time .... Wound up tight .. Dressed all in white
d|-10--8---7--8---7---------------10----8-----7------10----7--8---7--------|
A|-12--10--8--10--8---------------12----10----8------12----8--10--8--------|
F|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
C|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|

   .. Some torment ....
d|------10-------------------------5-----5----5----------------------------|
A|---8-----10-8-10-8--8--5-------5---5-5---55------------------------------|
F|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
C|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|

You'll need to listen to the song to figure out how these lead parts fit in with
the chords as they're quite tricky

Great starting point.

4th line "You'll never get to know" there should be an A chord above "never". Also, I don't think the F#m ever works and should (usually) be replaced with an A maj chord.

In the line "Wound up tight" above "up" is an F#m. Instead maybe just play the F# (6th string 2nd fret) as an angel note transition to C maj chord.

Above "Blowing out to drift" note that the A maj barre chord (E style 5th fret) is played as you can hear strings 1, 2, 3 (notes A, E, C#) which aren't in the open A maj chord.

Instead of C#dim try Em6 (042000).

Instead of D# try D#dim (x6757x).

There's some form of B after the C in the progression "C#dim D5 (slide to) E5 C". Try B7 or B barre (A style 2nd fret).
