**** I did NOT do this tab. I'm merely sharing it on Ultimate-Guitar for anyone
who doesn't know of the website it was taken from, and is looking for the tab.
Again, I did NOT tab this song. It was taken from http://www.sweetadeline.net/
talking_to_mary.txt. If you're interested in more Elliott Smith tabs, check out
http://www.sweetadeline.net/tabs.html. Enjoy!****

It almost killed me but here's my attempt at most of the chords and fills.
this is all a note higher than the mp3 that I have so I assume Elliott
played with his guitar tuned down to D. So bottom line, for the brain dead
like me, to play along with the recording you gotta tune all your strings
down a step, (two notes right?) That's too much trouble for me.

   E E9 E/F# G A2 A2/B C C5b D F Em

E9 E
talking to Mary
E/F# G Asus2 Asus2/B
you know you don't have to shout
C C5b
she can hear what you're thinking
D F Em
like you were saying it right out loud
E9 E
I'm sure she
E/F# G Asus2 Asus2/B
sees behind that dirty look
C C5b
it was her that followed
D F Em
down every stupid turn that you took

   C/G D Cmaj7 G (w/fill)

C/G D Cmaj7 G
one day she'll go
C/G D Cmaj7 G
I told you so
C/G D Cmaj7 G
one day she'll go
C/G D Cmaj7 G
I told you so

E9 E
saw the one big
E/F# G Asus2 Asus2/B
problem you keep under your hat
    C C5b
and it's pretty unlikely that
D F Em
anybody else'll be cool with that
    E9 E
you got bus fare in your pocket
E/F# G Asus2 Asus2/B
more money down in your sock
C C5b
but she can't tell you how to contact
D F Em
her if you won't listen to her talk

C/G D Cmaj7 G
one day she'll go
C/G D Cmaj7 G
I told you so
C/G D Cmaj7 G
one day she'll go
C/G D Cmaj7 G
I told you so

C B7
it's no problem
I'll just keep quiet
if it's easier for you
C B7
to make believing
that I don't love you
as much as I do

C/G D Cmaj7 G
one day she'll go
C/G D Cmaj7 G
I told you so
C/G D Cmaj7 G
one day she'll go
C/G D Cmaj7 G
I told you so
C/G D Cmaj7 G
I told you so
C/G D Cmaj7 G
I told you so

This is a very good tab. Not only do all the chords work perfect but you get the melody in there too. A+

Agreed with this being an ace tab. The chords are dead on...but tuning a guitar 2 full steps down sort of puts you a little lower and higher on some of the recorded bits.

This may be incorrect, but it is my belief that there are two guitars on the recording. One playing chords and the other playing some of the melodies. But, sometimes, you can hear the melodies being played on both guitars...sometimes slightly not in time with one another....if you want to get investigative..

I've seen some excellent videos on Youtube of some fellows taking stabs at this song and the best one I could find that shows finger placement is this one:

The uploader states that he thinks only some strings could be down tuned...He is slightly out of range on vocals, which throws off listening a bit, but it's still fairly dead on. Hence my belief that maybe, just maybe, on the recording one guitar is tuned slightly different than the other...by maybe only two or three strings. E had a tendency for not really caring if guitars were tuned correctly, and he did record bins of songs with guitars that weren't necessarily his/tuned properly...

hey sorry, first time i've actually logged in to the site in 3 years.

thank you hipster, as i stated at the start of the tab; this is not my own work, i merely found the tab in sweet adeline's corresponding section and put it up here since at the time there weren't any good transcriptions up.

as for your comment, oldguy:
i can almost guarantee you're correct in saying there were two guitars in the original. elliott is really hard to tab by ear because he was such a master with recording. that, combined with the fact that his melodic capabilities are otherworldly, making it near impossible to determine whether he's just killing it with one guitar or piecing together parts with two or three separate ones. most of his album cuts are done on multiple guitars, that's why when i try and figure out his songs by ear, i try and dig up a live version where i can see behind the magic.
there's a program called slow-down-er or something along those lines, it'll take any mp3 and give you the ability to play it back in any variety of different speeds and also let you shift the pitch, so if you play it back and up the pitch you should have an easier time figuring out what's going on.
as you said though, elliott often played guitars tuned by ear so a lot of his albums feature songs where the tuning isn't dead on, kinda just have to play a couple chords or riffs and use that to go off of.

thanks for the comments and likes though, all. if you need any more tabs, e-mail me at sethm13@gmail.com and i'll see what i can do <3
