The first and third lines of the verse go as follows (one chord per beat) E/D A/D E/D A/D.
The bass is playing a D, the melody is G# E and A. There is also a B floating around in there somewhere, indicating that this is a slash chord, not a sus chord. Slash Chords are normal chords with an unusual bass note, in this case a regular E chord with a D in the bass, followed by a regular A chord with a D in the bass.
