I like playing along to this version, Not sure what the 'double'chords mean, so I just play the first chords as they come to a standard strumming pattern - must say it fits together well.

Glad you like the tab, Ian. You can certainly play it simply the way you mentioned. The 'double chords', as you call them, are generally called slash chords. The first part is the chord name, and the letter after the slash indicates the accompanying bass note to play with that chord. In this song, for example on the G chord, the bass note alternates between a G bass note on the 6th string, and a D bass note on the open 4th string. In each case, pick the bass notes first followed by the strummed chord, to give it that bouncy country feel. In the case of the G/D, D/A, A/E, E/B, C/E you just hold down the basic chord but emphasis the bass note that's indicated. With D/C, D/F#, E/G# it requires a modified chord shape adding those extra notes. With the chords in brackets I don't play the full chord, just the descending bass notes. The chord legend at the top of my transcription indictates the chord shapes I use. If you know any experienced guitar players they should be able to show you this technique, it is much simpler than it sounds honestly, and adds a lot more interest to a basic chord pattern.
Hope all this makes sense.

Ian, Anytime you're trying to learn a new playing technique or chord, the best thing to do is just start as slow as you feel comfortable at, don't try to play along with the recording until you have learnt the chord sequences. Just try to maintain your own slower steady tempo, break the song down into sections, play one chord repeatedly with it's alternating bass note until you are able to play it a little faster. Then try the next chord in the song, as you gain confidence you can start to play from one chord to the next and maybe a little faster. Eventually the brain will imprint the repetitive information and you won't have to concentrate quite as hard anymore.
I thought this video might help...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUUsemeKEcYthere's lots of similar useful advice on playing alternating bass notes styles on YouTube, either strumming or picking styles.Best of luck,DJ
