Pretty much everyone says it's down-up-down, but one video I stumbled on Youtube (by guitar sage) and he said it's up-down-up. I was playing it the first way for a long time, but then I started the up-down-up method and I do feel it makes a bit of a difference in the overall feel, and it does even seem closer to what is in the song.
