Iron & Wine - Lion's Mane
from "The Creek Drank the Cradle" (2002)
Mapped by: C. MacInnis
This is my first Iron & Wine tab, and I am proud to submit this correct version of the
beautiful opening track from "The Creek Drank the Cradle".
I wish I could say that I was entirely responsible for this tab and how correct it is,
but I am deeply indebted to "aarvid" and the other fine folks over at
http://www.passingafternoon.com who, on top of running a damn fine Iron & Wine fansite,
have a forum of great contributors who originally posted a barebones draft of this tab.
I have added the lyrics and mapped how the riffs fit into the structure of the song. You
should be able to pick up on it rather quickly with a bit of practice.
Support Samuel Beam. See Iron & Wine in concert and purchase his CDs. Truly a gem of a musician.
Enjoy!

[Riff 1] and love is a tired symphony
[Riff 1] you hum when you're awake
[Riff 2] and love is a crying baby mama
[Riff 3] warned you not to shake
[Riff 4] and love's the best sensation
[Riff 5] hiding in the lion's
[Riff 1] mane
[Riff 1] [Riff 1] [Riff 1]
[verse progression, instrumental with banjo & guitar solo:]
[Riff 1] [Riff 1] [Riff 2] [Riff 3] [Riff 4] [Riff 5] [Riff 1] [Riff 1] [Riff 1] [Riff 1] so i'll
[Riff 1] clear the road, the gravel and the
[Riff 1] thornbush in your path
[Riff 2] that burns a scented oil that i'll
[Riff 3] drip into your bath
[Riff 4] the water's there to warm you
[Riff 5] and the earth is warmer when
[Riff 1] you laugh
[Riff 1]
[Riff 1] and love is the scene i render
[Riff 1] when you catch me wide awake
[Riff 2] and love is the dream you enter
[Riff 3] though i shake and shake and shake you
[Riff 4] and love's the best endeavor
[Riff 5] waiting in the lion's
[Riff 1] mane
[Riff 1] [Riff 1] [Riff 1]
[Second solo/Outro:]
[Riff 1] [Riff 1] [Riff 2] [Riff 3] [Riff 4] [Riff 5] [Riff 1] [Riff 1] [Riff 1] [Riff 1]

the note played with the thumb on beats 2 and 4 are almost always the fifth above the root (played on beats 1 and 3). you can hear this if you listen closely. the chourus, then, sees the 5th fret replacing the open D string and looks like this:
E|--------------------------------------------------------------|
B|------------0---------0-------------0------------0------------|
G|------0----------0------------0------------0------------------|
D|---------5---------5-------------5------------5---------------|
A|---3-----------3-----------3------------2---------------------|
E|--------------------------------------------------------------|
... and continues into the next bar.

americanclassic--the website (passingafternoon.com) that he lists has the solos there, and they're almost perfect.
