Stop This Train - John Mayer
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabbed by: willsside
Advanced Level
I based this tab off of live videos of John Mayer playing this song so this should be the correct rendition.
John Mayer has enormous hands so you will have to reach for some of these fingerings.
Also, the strumming is the hardest part of the song; I will go into detail below.
S T R U M M I N G
First lay the edge of your palm on the bridge of the guitar, but not too close to the strings that you
palm mute. Look at the first line of the song VVV, I use my thumb for the 0 on the D
string and my middle finger for the 3 on the B string.
e|------------------0--------------------------|
B|----3-------------------------3--------------|
G|-----------*2----------------------*2--------|
D|----0-------------------0--------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------|
Immediately after playing those two notes in unison, raise your hand off the guitar.
Now this is the hard part: hit the bridge of the guitar with the edge of your palm (not too hard) hard
enough to hear a thud. But at the same time, use the back nailtip of your pointer finger and hit the 2 on
string G.
- FOR VISUALIZATION
open your right hand like you're going to give a high five. now curl the pointer finger down. Try to
hold a pencil in your curled pointer finger. Now remove the pencil and don't move. That is what
finger should look like when it hits the guitar; the back of your nail hits the string.
(Try to be as accurate as possible on the string, but don't worry too much if you accidentally hit
other strings; the strumming effect sounds good in moderation)
Then I play the 0 on the e string with my middle finger, the 0 on the D with my thumb, 3 on B with middle,
and back to the whole raised/palm/nailtip business for the 2 on G.
This general pattern will be repeated throughout most if not all of the song.
FOR SIMPLICITY I will mark all of the raised/palm/nailtip'd notes in the tab with a *, as shown in the tab.
Practice makes perfect!

Dude. I was watching the Any Given Thursday vid trying to figure out how the hell he was hitting those notes with the hand the way he was. This is great.
