This is me being a pedantic git, it bothers me that the version I know best
   isn't on here.

This is the version Leadbelly did with The Golden Gate Quartet and includes
the correct lyrics to the entire song.

Another thing, I'm sure most people realise, but, the song, is a circle song, the Miss-a Rosie mentioned in the first verse, is coming to claim her man. With a ticket-of-leave, the "piece of paper in her hand". To get released you needed someone of good standing to vouch safe for you. In the last verse, his wife is dead, no-one will be coming to vouch safe for him. That's the "very long time" he's worried about. The only hope he has is a miracle, if the light of the midnight special train fell on you in your bunk, so the prison lore goes, you were sure to be released soon. I know, I know ..... I need to get out more. flatwound

One thing I forgot to mention when I was being a git about the lyrics, on the line "Well jumpin' little Judy, She was a mighty fine whore" I think the Golden Gate Choir sing "Girl", while Leadbelly sings "whore", at least that's how it sounds to my ear. So takes your choice with which one you would like to go with - flatwound -
