[Verse 1]
G
On one morning bright and clear
C
To my old home I drew near
A7 D7
Just a village down in sunny Tennessee
G
I'd been speeding on a train
C
That would take me home again
D7 G
To that girl I left in sunny Tennessee
[Chorus]
G G7
You could hear the children singing
C G
As she bid farewell to me
E
Far across those fields of cotton
A7 D7
My old homestead I could see
G G7
As the moon rose in its glory
C G
Then I told my saddest story
D7 G
To that girl I left in sunny Tennessee

As that train drew up at last

Old familiar scenes had passed

True kind friends gathered round

Smiles on every face I found

But I missed the one that I'd been searching for

I just whispered mother dear,
C
“Where is Mary she's not here?”

The world grew dark and sadness came to me

She just pointed to the spot

In that little church yard lot
D7 G
Where Mary sleeps in sunny Tennessee
[Chorus]

You could hear the children singing
C G
As she bid farewell to me

Far across the fields of cotton

My old homestead I could see

Then I told my saddest story

If this is the version from whiskey before breakfast, I was trying to do the chords and I heard the first part of every verse ends in a II - V chord progression leaving it unresolved. Not a V - I. Then the second phrase of the verse is how you have it with the V - I. Not 100% sure but thats what im hearing in my head.
