Hi! This is my first tab ever, so please don't be mad when it's wrong. Personally I
think it's quite accurate. You should be able to figure out the strumming pattern yourself,
just listen closely to the song.
Thank you

CAPO 5th fret

Verse 1:
C G
When I was a kid
          D Em
I used to buy and sell gravity
C G
I knew how to fly
            D Em
And I could teach you for a fee
C G
Break every window
      D Em
In my hotel heart
C G D Em
I was only 5 years old but 12 years scarred
C G
And I'd hear the same voice
D Em
Echo in my mind
C G
Said 'son you got an angel,
             D Em
To chase the devil at the light

Chorus:
C G
When I was a kid
        D Em
My grandfather was a preacher
C G
He'd talk about God
            D Em
Yeah he was something like a teacher
C G
He said God only helps those
    D Em
Who learn to help themselves
C G
He was a million miles from a million dollars
    D Em
But you could never spend his wealth

Verse 2:
C G
I took a little faith
    D Em
And put it in a parking lot
C G
I drove to a strange town
        D Em
Full of have and have nots
C G D Em
And as I walked through that storybook life
C G D Em (let it ring)
I was looking for an angel to chase the devil at the light

Oh! oh! oh!

Chorus:
C G
When I was a kid
        D Em
My grandfather was a preacher
C G
He'd talk about love
            D Em
Yeah he was something like a teacher
C G
He said God only helps those
    D Em
Who learn to help themselves
C G
He was a million miles from a million dollars

Hi, music theory/string major here, so excuse me if I don’t explain this well: Some of the home chords, (the I out of VII, or the chord of the key, i.e., playing in key of G makes G the home chord) are put in place when vi (minor 6th, i.e., Em is the vi and sister chord of G in the key of G) is actually played- this is one of my favorite songs but the darker implications of the chords are lost in this transposition- though I will say this is an excellent first attempt for someone just learning to play by ear, it’s just emphatically simple and a bit erroneous- very easy mistake for a beginner to make is confusing a minor chord for its major sister.

It seemed to me that instead of E#m an E7 actually sounded better. But I don't have the actual song in front of me.
