I haven't been this thankful for a song in a long time. We all know that finding songs can be a lot like a giant Flea Market. Sure there's tons of crap you have to wade through, but it's part of the charm, and efforts almost always pay off. Once in awhile though you stumble on to that rare , perfect find. Best thing about music is that you can share those finds with everybody else. First, there is NOTHING complicated about this piece. There is nothing that requires great guitar, or musical skills. It makes itself available to all of us. It can be made with whatever basic music staples that are found in everybodies cupboard. But don't be fooled. Common ingredients yes, but each and every ingredient is PERFECT in it's measure, and blend, and tone, and spirit. And if you happen upon it while playing the song, it is one of the most satisfying experiences you can musically have. The song begins so indescript. It doesn't tip it's hand at all. Then you just kind of tumble into the song. If you stuggle against it, you'll make the ride, but find you were bangin' into the sides most the time. The song never asks for your flare or your interpretation of what you "think" it could be. Every word is on purpose, every phrase is on purpose, every rise and fall is on purpose, and (my fave) the soul of the thing is a perfect and delicate place. All of it comes together and forms this perfect line in the racetrack that will take you, carry you, suspend you through the entire ride. It will probably strike you at some point that the man isn't crying out to be rescued, he isn't really lamenting, he isn't pulling and tugging at her, nor hiding his ugly parts from her in any way either. When you finally ask yourself what exactly he IS doing, the answer is sublime. He's praying with her. Might not look like prayin' you're use to;......but look closer, he's prayin' with her. In the end, this song is deeply rewarding on every level, and accessible at every level, and if you let go and allow you voice to just tumble over the melody and offer no resistence to where it takes you;....you will be given one of the most richly satisfying experiences you will ever have with a song. Great job on the tab Dave;...and incredible job with a song Mr Montagne.

Great tab Thank you so much .... I definitely hear a G7 chord in the verses right at "sold my coat" other than that pretty spot on the money thanks so much

Easily one of Ray's best songs ever. This one and Let It Be Me are, in my opinion, some of the greatest songs of our era. I can't say enough how much I love this song! I saw him for the first time ever, by accident, on Austin City Limits. And after it was over, I realized my hands were sweaty, and I was super tense. Very rarely do I get sucked in to a performance to that degree!
