Song: The boxer
Artist: Simon & Garfunkel
Composer: Paul Simon
Album: Bridge over troubled water
Tabbed by DJ
1st Sept 2015

TUNING:
The original album version is not quite in exact concert pitch.
Paul Simon is tuned down almost a semi -tone to D# G# C# F# A# D#
(The song will now sound in the approx. key of B) To add further
fine- tuning all the strings are up approx.+20 above concert pitch,
using a chromatic tuner. The master tape was probably sped up slightly.

Alternatively, to avoid any retuning at all, live versions are more
likely to be in standard tuning and also concert pitch.
Here's a link to one live version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiWLB3HJFwI
This is slightly slower in tempo, and also includes an extra verse not
used on the 'Bridge over troubled water' album, as it was decided to
have an instrumental break instead.

The original album intro, played by Fred Carter Jnr., is in a double
dropped D tuning. Paul Simon would often not bother playing this part
when playing live, or would play a standard tuning variation of it.

I've included the missing verse at the bottom, along with a tab of the
intro in the open tuning.

Chords shapes are named as if in standard tuning:
C   = x32010   G    = 320003   F/C = x33211
C/G = 332010   G7/F = xx3003   Em  = 022000
C/B = x2xxxx   G6/E = xx2003   F   = 133211
Am  = x02210   G/D  = xx0003   G7  = 320001

h  = hammer-on
p  = pull-off
/  = slide up
\  = slide down
^  = emphasise the beat

For the alternating bass note on the C chord, just use the C/G shape
for both chords and emphasise the 5th string then the 6th string.

C  C/G            C    C/G      C    C/G            C     C C/B  Am
       Then I’m laying out my winter clothes, and wishing I was gone,
       G   G7/F                           G6/E   G/D       C    C/G

          C      C/G       C    C/G     C     C  C/B  Am
In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade,
          G                     G7/F             G6/E     G/D
And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down,
    C   C   C/G      C        C/G         C     C  C/B  Am
Or cut him 'til he cried out, in his anger and his shame,

'I am leaving, I am leaving!',
                          ( C )              G

C  C/G  C   C/G       C        C/G    C      C/G
            Now the years are rolling by me,

They are rocking e - ven - ly,
          G                          G7/F             G6/E
And I am older than I once was, and younger than I'll be,

That's not un - usu - al, no, it is - n't strange,

After changes upon changes,
                         ( C )                G
We are, more or less, the same, af - ter changes we are,
