To get the descending A G# F# E bass line on the turnaround (several comments above), try playing the A as a barre on the fifth fret, then play E as a barre (C shape) on the fourth fret, then D with an F# bass note, then a regular A with an open E string, and then D. That’s the bass line you seek, but with Pencom’s chords, which sound right to me.

Instead of the E in the chorus try an Amaj9. And the progression after "put a load right on me is A - Amaj9 - F#m -E -D (done twice at the end.)
