If you tune a half step down and play C to Cmaj7 (verse and I know technically thats not the chord I mean the way its played not the actual notes) then Am to D for Chorus its way easier. The F#6 becomes a G6 and the Bridge (break) becomes C, Am, C, Am, Em, F, C, G
I would be willing to bet thats the way the cars played it.

or you can go down 1 fret with all chords and then you can play normal C and I think that's sound even better/ But this chodrs are very good *

All the right chords but using a capo on 2nd fret makes it a bit easier to play. Chords are:
[A] [Amaj7] for intro and versus
[F#m] [Bm](or [B]) [A] [Amaj7] for chorus
[A] [F#m] [A] [F#m] [C#m] [D] [A] [E] for break
when capo on second fret.
