                        "One Less Bell To Answer"
                           (Bacharach - David)

[This one came out in the fall of 1970, and while Bacharach and David
continued to collaborate for another couple of years I believe this was
their last big hit.]

Intro:

        Dmaj7 G13 Dmaj7
         / / / / / /
        Em7/G F#m7 Gmaj7/E
         / / /

Verse 1:

        Dmaj7 D6 Dmaj7
        One less bell to answer
        Bm9 F#m7 Bm9 F#m7
        One less egg to fry
        Gmaj7 C#m7/F# F#7
One less man to pick up after
        Bm9 E7 Em7/A
        I should be happy
            Em7 F#m7 Gmaj7 Gmaj7/A (Dmaj7)
But all I do is cry

Verse 2:

         Dmaj7 D6 Dmaj7
(Cry, cry, no more laughter) I should be happy
         Bm9 F#m7 Bm9 F#m7
        (Oh, why did he go)
        Gmaj7 C#m7/F# F#7
Since he left my life's so empty

Bridge:

        Ebmaj7 Gm7
Though I try to forget it just can't be done
                      Abmaj7 Dm7/G
Each time the doorbell rings I still run

                    Cmaj7 Cmaj7/E
I don't know how in the world
                Fmaj7 Cmaj7/E
        To stop thinking of him
        Fmaj7 Cmaj7/E Bm7/E E7
'Cause I still love him so
                     Em9 A13
I spend each day the way I start out
        Em9 A13
        Crying my heart out

Verse 3 (first two lines instrumental):

        Dmaj7 D6 Dmaj7
          / / / / / / / /
         Bm9 F#m7 Bm9 F#m7
          / / / / / / / /

        Gmaj7 F#m7 Bm7
One less man to pick up after
        Em9 A13 Am6 B7-9
No more laughter, no more love
        Em9 F#m7 Gmaj7 Gmaj7/A
Since he went away (he went away)

Coda:

         Dmaj7 D6 Dmaj7
(One less bell to answer) Why did he leave me
         Bm9 F#m7 Em7/G F#m7 Gmaj7/E Gmaj7/A
(Why, why, why did he leave)

(One less bell to answer) Now I've got one less egg to fry
                                      One less egg to fry
(Why, why, why did he leave) And all I do is cry

(One less bell to answer) Because a man told me goodbye
(Why, why, why did he leave)

(One less bell to answer) Somebody tell me please
Where did he go, why did he go
(Why, why, why did he leave) How could he leave me

        [end cold on Dmaj7]

the G13 in the intro sounds more like a Gmaj9 to me, based on the melody.... maybe im wrong... but it seems to go better with the melody as a maj9 since there is an F# in the melody, not an F natural

It's fine as is; try 3x345x. Note that the melody completely avoids the F# on that chord.
