I think you can really make it your own using any strumming pattern, (as long as it's not a huge change of pace). However, if you listen closely to the chords in the background of the song, it sounds as if he's just picking quickly down the strings from EADGBe consecutively.

So personally, I play with consecutive downward strums, without a pick and instead using my thumb. I find that it mimics the song pretty well (especially since the main tablature is done on a 2nd guitar).
