So, to set the record straight, these two chord tabbed versions aren't at all a bad start for performing this tune. The most known version with piano and full backing band, found on Waits's debut album Closing Time, is in F# Major. So, you'll have to do a little work with transposing these chords to F# Major. More on that later. The equally powerful, but lesser known version from Early Years Vol. 2, has Tom Waits by his lonesome accompanying himself on guitar and that's it. That one is in the key of Bb. That key can be achieved by slapping on a capo at the first fret and using the "Version 1" set of chords of these two arrangements.Of the two arrangements, the first one is more simple, more straightforward. I think it's best for the solo acoustic performance. The second, just as the first one, can be transposed to whatever key you wish it to be in other than the C Major that it's set it, does have an extra passing chord in the first half of the verses. This is found at "Out to my ol' 55" and "I had to be on my way" in the 1st and 2nd verses, respectively. Instead of the IV - I changeover in the first version (marked as D - A in that version's key of A and would be simply, F - A, if set in C Major as in the second version) You see this:F G C or a IV-V-I.This extra V chord thrown in there sounds like it's there in the piano laden original studio released version that Tom recorded on Closing Time.Anyway, I digress. As mentioned before you can use the version 1 chords to perform in the key of the acoustic guitar only version Tom does as found on Early Years Vol. 2 album, simply put on a capo at the first fret. For the piano and fully backed band version on his debut album Closing Time, see the following transposed version to the key of F# of both of the above versions. ok i must ask...do none of you play your version along with the song? the tom version is actually in F# not A or C. to give you an idea, the chord prgression for the intro and first half of the verse is F#, Bbm, B, F#.
