This is a great song. I'm no expert but I found the chords are much better played as bar chords and as the song/vocals go higher as they enter the chorus climb the fretboard and play the G as a A chord barred on the 10th fret

After the G at 'time to learn', you could add a G7
(I think the lyrics the other way around though, 'time to learn, time to care')
