There are many slight variations in the course of the song. I just put
down the first intro and the lick that is played on the piano.

INTRO
| D | Am | G | D |
| D | Am | G | D |
| D | Am | G | D |

VERSE
              D Am
Well, she was standing by the highway
       G D
In her boots and silver spurs
      D Am
Gonna hitchhike to the yellow moon
       G D
When a Cadillac stopped for her

               D Am
And she said, "Hey, nice to meet you,
G D
Are you goin' my way?"
D Am
Yeah, that's when it happened
    G D
The world caught fire that day

CHORUS
        C G D
And she went down - swingin'
          C G D
Yeah, she went down - swingin'

VERSE
              D Am
Well, she was over twenty-one
   G D
In trouble with the law
       D Am
And it didn't faze her none
    G D
She called her mother-in-law

           D Am
And said I need a little money
  G D
I knew I could count on you
D Am
After that night in Vegas
        G D
And the hell that we went through

CHORUS
   C G D
We went down - swingin' - like Benny Goodman
         C G D
Yeah, we went down - swingin'

She was 'cross the Georgia line
       D Am
Looked out the window feeling great
         G D
Yeah, it had to come in time

        D Am

The Am can be interchangeable with Am7 (especially if you double the 7th by playing a G on the top E string at the 3rd fret) or even a C chord itself.

Thanks for the comment!
Am (x-0-2-2-1-0), Am7 (x-0-2-2-1-3 or x-0-2-0-1-3) - fine!
C - definitely not: the bass clarly plays an "a" as the root.
