Playing along with Waits, I don't hear him going to C after the A7 in the chorus, straight to D. First line of chorua the second chord, D, sounds right the rest of the time I hear the bass playing a B which makes it a Bm or a D with a B bass, of course I am transposing as Waits does this in F#

instead of the G Em he's hitting G, C, G and there is a D7 at the beginning of most lines that start with G too
Me thinks the Eagles version is getting in here somewhere?

Either play it in F#, F with a capo on the 1st fret or play in G and tune a half step down. Best way to get it closer to the recording.
