Lyric sheets are limited when it comes to rhythm and phrasing. They are also an interpretation of changes that occur because of the interaction of multiple instruments and not just an acoustic guitar, so there are probably numerous things you could do that would 'fit' with what they are doing. My best advice is to not be worried about being limited to any one specific rhythm pattern being 'right' for any particular song, but to exploit the pendulum action of your arm, keep it simple and consistent through the song, and trust your instincts. Pay atention to the beat or part of a beat on which the change occurs and use something you already do well. Be adventurous :)
