I Was In The House When The House Burned Down
  From Life'll Kill Ya

Capo on the third fret to match recording

Note: This is the way I play it for ease of playing. To more exactly match recording,
the progressions at the end of each verse should be a quick G/C/G switch, followed by
the Em D G. Same progression in between verses.

  Intro: | G | X2

  G
I had the shit till it all got smoked
  D
I kept the promise till the vow got broke
  D
I had to drink from the lovin' cup
    G
I stood on the banks till the river rose up
  C
I saw the bride in her wedding gown
  G D G Em D (or G/C/G Em D)
I was in the house when the house burned down

     G Em D X3 G

I may be old and I may be bent
But I had the money till it all got spent
I had the money till they made me pay
Then I had the sense to be on my way
I had to stay in the underground
I was in the house when the house burned down

      G Em D X3

    Chorus:

       C
I was in the house when the house burned down
       G
I met the man with the thorny crown
           D
I helped Him carry his cross through town
       G D G Em D
I was in the house when the house burned down

       Harmonica Break: G Em D (2x) G D D G C G

       Chorus

Repeat verse 1, End on G

An old favorite of mine, I love this entire Warren Zevon album. I'm a total beginner at guitar (3 months ago I cut my fingernails, and picked up my first guitar) and I am delighted to find some of my old favorite songs are easy to play...even for me! I miss Warren Zevon. I love that I can play this song, in memory of him.
