Actually, the song was written by Steve Goodman and released in 1971.
Shortly after, Goodman did a gig with Arlo Guthrie, who added
the tune to his repetoire. The rest is history and the song has been
covered by everyone from Wille Nelson to Merle Haggard to The Grateful Dead.
Willie Nelson released his first recorded version on his 1984
album of the same name (as the song). It reached #1 on both the Billboard Hot Country Singles charts in the U,S,A, and the RPM Country Tracks chart in Canada.
Steve Goodman won a posthumous Grammy Award for Best Country Song at the 27th Grammy Awards in 1985, for Willie Nelson's version.
