I've seen Chris use a capo on the 8th fret for the whole song. I'm not sure about the pattern, but I'm sure about the capo.

Interesting...then the droning note would just be the sixth string and you could play the little chorus riff with just an Em chord shape, but you wouldn't be able to play the chord that followed the chorus riff.
