Carmelita chords
Warren Zevon

A E 2x
A

       E
I hear mariachi static on the radio,
                               B7
and the tubes they glow in the dark.

And I'm there with her in Ensenada,
                      E
when I'm here in Echo Park

E A
Carmelita, hold me tighter,
  E A
I think I'm sinking down.
        E B7
And I'm all strung out on heroin,
                    E
on the outskirts of town.

         E
Well I'm sitting here playing solitaire,
                      B7
with my pearl handled deck.

The county won't give me no more methadone,
                              E
and they cut off your welfare check.

E A
Carmelita, hold me tighter,
  E A
I think I'm sinking down.
        E B7
And I'm all strung out on heroin,
                    E
on the outskirts of town.

E B7 E E A E A E B7 E

       E
Well I pawned my Smith Corona,
                      B7
and I went to meet my man.

He hangs out down on Alvarado Street,
                       E
by the Pioneer Chicken Stand.

E A
Carmelita, hold me tighter,
  E A
I think I'm sinking down.
        E B7
And I'm all strung out on heroin,
                    E
on the outskirts of town.

E A
Carmelita, hold me tighter,
  E A
I think I'm sinking down.
        E B7
And I'm all strung out on heroin,
                    E
on the outskirts of town.

I think that "playing solitaire with a pearl handled deck" is a metaphor for sitting alone with a gun in your hand, contemplating taking action - suicide? armed robbery?

[history lesson] Smith Corona did indeed make typewriters, but during the second world war they also made rifles, so both interpretations could be correct for the same reference. [/history lesson]

That being said, I've heard both the original, and orginally unreleased demo, and the transcription above is faithful to both of those. Linda Rondstadt recorded "Smith and Wesson" in her version, as did several others.
