I dont fully understand it, but i think because standard tuning is (low to high) EADG, and the literal meaning for drop D is GDAD, some people take drop D and just tune each string however many steps they need to for the song. like, Standard E,A,D,G Drop D D,A,D,G Drop C C,G,C,F Drop B B,F#,B,E Drop A# (Above) A#,F,A#,D# If that doesnt help, try looking up tunings on wikipedia... theres more about it there.
