Travis pickin’! Takes some practice, but your thumb basically alternates between the root and fifth bass notes, while you play the other notes/chords with your fingers. Give a listen to Steve Earles “goodbye” or “ft worth blues”. They are very similar.

I've tried to figure out the picking pattern of this but I just can't seem to figure it out. Any chance you can help out?

If you want to sound like the recording, tune the whole guitar down a semi-tone to Eb standard, and play standard D-G-C-Am etc…figure chords. Or, if you want to stay in this key and standard tuning I would capo fret 1 and play C figures. Drew does this a lot. Find Your People he tunes down the whole guitar a full tone to D standard. Or you could go no capo, C figures and sing a semi-tone lower than the recording if it works for your voice.
