I've been a country picker for years, and recently added this song to my
repertoire of "standards".
I was amazed that none of the internet versions floating around use the correct
chords in the bridge.
The original recording was in the key of E, but some of his live versions are in
F. I've kept to the original arrangement.
[Intro]
e|-------------0-0-0-0-0-0-0-|
B|-------------0-0-0-0-0-0-0-|
G|-------------1-1-1-1-2-2-1-|
D|----2----2---2-2-2-2-2-2-2-|
A|-2h4--2h4----2-2-2-2-2-2-2-|
E|-----------0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-|
Play this lick twice. Basically it's the bass lick followed by an down-up strum of
E-E-E-E-Esus4-Esus4-E
[Verse 1]
E
Silver wings shining in the sunlight
F#m B
Roaring engines headed somewhere in flight
E
They're taking you away and leaving me lonely
F#m B E
Silver wings slowly fading out of sight
[Bridge]
F#m B
Don't leave me I cry
E D#+ E
Don't take that airplane ride
F#
But you've locked me out of your mind
B
And left me standing here behind
(Stop)
The D#+ can be played: x-6-5-4-4-x
You can substitute D#7#5 which is easier to transition to from the open E
x-2-1-0-2-x Either chord works.
Note the F# major in the bridge....not the more commonly used F#m.
Give a listen to the original, you'll see it's the way the Hag plays it.

A good listen will reveal Tommy to be correct. I hear what he does, and further agree with his interpretation of the Bridge beginning with an A (iv) chord over an F#m (ii). There are several instruments that pop up in the back ground, some sound quick to the beat even, they "color" the arrangement. The F# (MAJOR) in the Bridge part is spot on. As far as going to an F#7( Tommyk87) after the F#,("standing here"..)-sounds good to me, and it does transition well. The hitch in "airplane" is whatever it is, we tried the Eb+, with the other guitar player playing the x-2-1-0-2- chord, which wasn't exactly a scientific experimentation, as the guy couldn't fathom an augmented chord, or play this one in time, to render an honest impression. (He also couldn't not play, so I cant offer any pseudo-scientific thing there, I much prefer the song in E major as it is originally. Using Mr. Tommymc's interpretation over the others proved most correct for my ears and the coconut between. I'm not blessed with perfect pitch or degreed by Julliard, but I have heard the song since it came out,and likewise seen it played a myriad of different ways. Have been an active student to the theory/language for those 40 odd years. All the best tommymc, I appreciate you considerably, Sir.
