The Huron Carol – Traditional Canadian Carol
This carol was written in 1643 by Jean de Brebuef (a Jesuit missionary)
for the Huron people of the Sainte-Marie region of Quebec.
[Verse 1]
Am Em Am Em Am
'Twas in the moon of winter-time when all the birds had fled,
Am Em Am G Am
That mighty Gitchi Manitou sent angel choirs instead;
Slow ---
C Em
Before their light the stars grew dim,
Pause
Am G Em
and wond’ring hunters heard the hy -mn:
Am G Am Em Am E7 Am
Jesus your King is born, Je-sus is born, In excel-sis glori-a."
[Verse 2]
Am Em Am Em Am
Within a lodge of broken bark the tender Babe was found,
Am Em Am G Am
A ragged robe of rabbit skin enwrapp'd His beauty round;
Slow ---
C Em
But as the hunter braves drew nigh,
Pause
Am G Em
the angel song rang loud and hi-gh...
Am G Am Em Am E7 Am
"Jesus your King is born, Je-sus is born, In excel-sis glori-a."
[Verse 3]
Am Em Am Em Am
O children of the forest free, O sons of Mani-tou,
Am Em Am G Am
The Holy Child of earth and heaven is born to-day for you.
Slow ---
C Em
Come kneel before the radiant Boy
Pause
Am G Em
who brings you beauty, peace and jo-y.
Am G Am Em Am E7 Am
"Jesus your King is born, Je-sus is born, In excel-sis glori-a."
[Verse 4]
Am Em Am Em Am
The earliest moon of winter-time is not so round and fair,
Am Em Am G Am
As was the ring of glory on the helpless infant there;
Slow --- C Em
The chiefs from far be-fore him knelt
Pause
Am G Em
with gifts of fox and beaver pe-lt.
Am G Am Em Am E7 Am
Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born, In excel-sis glori-a."
