How to play

100% correct. Maybe people hesitate to use this tab because the tuning looks scary, but its really only a D as the 6th string and then standard tuning from there
+1

I listened to the power tab version on gp5 and it sounds amazingly perfect! thanks and great job

In DGCFAD tuning:
Chords Organized:
Verse: C-Cmaj7/B-Am7-C/G-F-Fmaj7/E-Dm7-[G]
Chorus: (F-Fmaj7/E-C-Bbadd9)x2 then F-Am-F
Outro: F-G-C
Chords with Roman Numeral Analysis:
Verse: I-Imaj7(4/2)-vi7-I(6/4)-IV-IVmaj7(4/2)-ii7-[V]
Chorus in C: (IV-IVmaj7(4/2)-I-bVII)x2 then IV-vi-IV
Chorus in F: (I-Imaj7(4/2)-V-IV) then I-iii-I
Outro: IV-V-I
Chords Explained:
Verse:
Before we start. Lay out your Cmaj scale (C-D-E-F-G-A-B). Then lay out your tonic chords.
(C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, Bdim). Then in 7ths. (Imaj7-iim7-iiim7-IVmaj7-V7-vim7-viim7b5)
Okay so we start on the I, of course and we move the bass line down through a very nice progression.
The first stop is the Imaj7 in 3rd inversion (4/2). This is a passing 4/2 chord. It's a means to
prolong tonic harmony. See the 2nd chord in Moonlight Sonata. The second stop is the vi(Am7). This
is the diatonic submediant. It may serve several functions in music but here it's acting as a tonic
expansion. The vi7(A-C-E-G) and I(C-E-G) share chord tones and have an important relationship that
you can read up on elsewhere. The next stop is the I triad in 2nd inversion (I6/4). Still tonic
harmony but it accommodates that descending bass. The IV and ii are predominant to the dominant V.
Very basic tonic-predominant-dominant area that I'm too lazy to talk much more about here. Well I
should mention that although skeleton-ized, the G is implied by that little riff. It forms a ii-V-I
progression. The V-I cadence is a perfect authentic cadence, a very strong cadence in music.
Chorus:
Notice how there's a pretty strong feeling of a new sound here. I'm no expert but my opinion
would be to consider this a modulation to F. There are several types of modulations. Often
you'll see in-between chords that serve function in both keys and help ease the transition.
I believe this chorus is just that type of case of pivot chord modulation to the IV via the G. Notice
the riff (G-G-A-G) that leads into the chorus. What is the G to C major? What is the G to F major?
In C, the G is your V. In F, the G is your ii. All I will say is that it's very common to use a
subdominant chord (ii, IV, vi) to perform a modulation. Also a quick definition: Modulation is
movement to a new key where the resulting music contains a cadence. Tonicization is movement to a
new key that does not include a cadence.
So anyways in the key of F. You run a I-I(4/2)-V-IVadd9 progression twice. Then you go I-iii-I.
The I-V-IV progression deserves some close attention. Here you have V-IV movement which is
referred to as retrogression. It sets up a plagal cadance (IV-I). The plagal cadence is a very
nice cadence. Also can't forget to mention the add9. First spell it out, the IVadd9 in the key of F
is Bb-[D]-F-[A]-C (1-3-5-7-9), The D is bracketed because it isn't included until the 2nd chorus
|x3(2)033|. The A is bracketed because it's omitted completely from all voicings. It's just there as
a place holder to help novices see how to count from your 1 to your 9. Now we consider the
implications. What is the C doing here?:
1) Well, most obvious, it's the key to the verse progression so that's worth mentioning.
2) In the key of F, C is the dominant.
So you could argue that adding the 9th(C) to the IV chord(Bb) of the key of F major(I) is an interesting
way to 1) possibly hint back to the key of C major in the verse progression AND 2) Mix some dominant
harmony into a subdominant chord. TL;DR extensions (9ths, 11ths, 13ths) are nice.
The I-iii-I is a little trickier. The iii (A-C-E) is the mediant chord and can perfom
either tonic (F-A-C) or dominant (C-E-G) function due to the shared chord tones. It's very common to
use it as a weaker dominant function chord. I think I would classify this little progression as
tonic-dominant substitute-tonic which sets up another plagal cadence (F-C) to bring us back into C and
the verse progression.
Outro:
Not much to say except this is the first time you see the V chord in full fashion and not just a riff
so it's the strongest such V-I perfect authentic cadence in the song.
Harmony Outline:
C: Tonic
Cmaj7/B: Tonic
