Words and Music by Chris Cornell with thanks to Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament

Arrangement for 1 clean electric

6/8 time
Intro - Let ring throughout
The intro is really simple fingerpicking
Part I
e|----3-----3-|----3-----3-|-------0-----|------0-----|
B|--3-----3---|--3-----3---|-----3---3---|----3---3---|
G|------------|------------|---0-------0-|--0-------0-|
D|3-----3-----|2-----2-----|-------------|------------|
A|------------|------------|-1-----------|0-----------|
E|------------|------------|-------------|------------|
Part II of the intro starts out similar to part I in the first stanza, except you start
on the A string, instead of D. The second stanza changes just a bit, but it is still similar.
Part II
e|----3-----3-|------0-----|-----0-----0-|-------0-----|
B|--3-----3---|----3---3---|-------------|-----3---3---|
G|------------|--0-------0-|---0-----0---|---0-------0-|
D|------------|------------|-------------|-------------|
A|3-----3-----|2-----------|-------------|-------------|
E|------------|------------|-1-----1-----|-0-----------|
Part III of the intro is where Chris's vocals would come in. This introduces a simple chord
progression into the song that you're going to see a few more times. There are some finger-
picking notes added in to account for the lack of a 2nd guitar.
Part III
e|1---1-1|4---4-4|3-----|3-----|1---1-1|4---4-4|3-3-3-3-3---6|1-1-1-1-4---|
B|1---1-1|4---4-4|3-----|--3---|1---1-1|4---4-4|3-3-3-3-3--5-|1-1-1-1-4---|
G|2---2-2|5---5-5|4-----|----4-|2---2-2|5---5-5|4-4-4-4-4-4--|2-2-2-2-5---|
D|3---3-3|6---6-6|5-----|------|3---3-3|6---6-6|5-5-5-4-5----|3-3-3-3-6---|
A|3---3-3|6---6-6|5-----|------|3---3-3|6---6-6|5-5-5-5-5----|3-3-3-3-6---|
E|1---1-1|4---4-4|3-----|------|1---1-1|4---4-4|3-3-3-3-3----|1-1-1-1-4---|
V ^sl sl ring ring
And that's it for the intro.
The verses are a repeating / inverse pattern. You'll also see the structure for the verses
throughout the song in other areas, as well. Although this is written for a single guitar,
it wouldn't hurt to have an accompianist on rhythm for the chords.
Verse I
Part I
G Am C
e|------3----|---------------|------0----|------0----|
B|----4---4--|------1h3p1----|--------1--|----3---3--|
G|--3-------3|----2-------2--|----0-----0|--0-------0|
D|-----------|--2-----------2|--2--------|-----------|
A|-----------|0--------------|3----------|-----------|
E|3----------|---------------|-----------|0----------|
Let bass notes ring throughout
Part II
G Am C F
e|------3----|---------------|------3----|------x-0-------------|
B|----4---4--|------1h3r1----|--------1--|1---1p0-0-0------1----|
G|--3-------3|----2-------2--|----0-----0|2---2p0-0-0-0-0h2-2p0-|
D|-----------|--2-----------2|--2--------|3---3-3-3-------------|
A|-----------|0--------------|3----------|0---0-x-x-------------|
E|3----------|---------------|-----------|------x-x-------------|
This is where you start seeing the repeats / inverse. Note the G on the high e when playing
the C on the 3rd measure, this time.
Part III
G Am C
e|------3----|---------------|------3----|------0----|
B|----4---4--|------1h3p1----|--------1--|----3---3--|
G|--3-------3|----2-------2--|----0-----0|--0-------0|
D|-----------|--2-----------2|--2--------|-----------|
A|-----------|0--------------|3----------|-----------|
E|3----------|---------------|-----------|0----------|
Notice here that the pattern for the final F has changed a bit, the the G(3) on the High e is back
to it's original E(0) note. You'll reverse these patterns for the second verse.
Part IV
e|------3----|---------------|------0----|---------------|
B|----4---4--|------1h3p1----|--------1--|1-1-1-1-1-1-1-0|
G|--3-------3|----2-------2--|----0-----0|2-2-2-2-2-2-2-0|
D|-----------|--2-----------2|--2--------|3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3|
A|-----------|0--------------|3----------|0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0|
E|3----------|---------------|-----------|---------------|
Let last note ring
This is almost exactly the same as Part II of the Intro. Notice how the 2nd and 4th measures differ.
Bridge
Part I
e|----3-----3-|----3-----3-|------0-----|------0-----|
B|--3-----3---|--3-----3---|----3---3---|----3---3---|
G|------------|------------|--0-------0-|--0-------0-|
D|------------|------------|------------|------------|
A|3-----3-----|2-----2-----|------------|------------|
E|------------|------------|1-----------|0-----------|
Then the following barre chords, G (3rd fret), Bb (6th fret), A (5th fret) (each chord gets a full measure,
strummed) followed by a Cadd9 for 2 measures: I'm not going to tab out each stroke for this part:
Part II
e|3-----------|6-----------|5-----------|------------|
B|3-----------|6-----------|5-----------|3-----------|
G|4-----------|7-----------|6-----------|0-----------|
D|5-----------|8-----------|7-----------|2-----------|
A|5-----------|8-----------|7-----------|3-----------|
E|3-----------|6-----------|5-----------|------------|
hold for 2 measures
This would be where Chris sings "Say Hello 2 Heaven" Note here that we're switching to standard chords.
It could probably be played as barre, but I think the transition between G and the D / Dsus4 / D is easier
as standard.
Part III
e|------2----|------2h3p2----|----------|
B|----2---2--|----3-------3--|3---------|
G|--0-------0|--2-----------2|0---------|
D|-----------|0--------------|2---------|
A|-----------|---------------|3---------|
E|3----------|---------------|----------|
2 measures strummed
Here, the G repeats, but, the D has a strange finger roll. The (2)p0 on the D string in the second measure
is done by plucking the string with your fret hand as you're pulling off to 0. I didn't take lessons, so,
I'm not sure what this is called.
Part IV
e|------2----|-------------------|------|
B|----2---2--|-------------------|3-----|
G|--0-------0|--2p0---0----------|0-----|
D|-----------|0-----2---(2)p0----|2-----|
A|-----------|----------------0h3|3-----|
E|3----------|-------------------|------|

Verse II lead-in
e|1-1-1-4-4|

G|3-3-3-5-5|
D|2-2-3-6-6|
A|2-2-1-6-6|
E|1-1-1-4-4|
And that wraps up the first verse. As we go into the second verse, you should notice that the pattern from
verse 1 inverts here. It's exactly the same, but, in a different order:

Let final note ring
The following is my take on the solo, which was previously tabbed out by me. I have only edited
to add a couple of spaces where they need to be added. I intend to go back and separate out the
measures, as well as provide better explanations, but that may take some time.

Verse III is where we see significant differences in the pattern of the song, however, it's
arguably easier than the previous verses, as it's generally barre chords.
Verse III Part I
e|-----5p3--|-------8p6--|-------------|--7---|
B|----3---3-|-----5----5-|-------------|9--9--|
G|---4-----4|----6-6----6|---10--10p9--|9---9-|
D|----------|---7--------|--9--9-----9-|9----9|
A|----------|------------|------------9|7-----|
E|3---------|5-----------|8------------|------|
Verse III Part II
e|3----5p3--|5------7p5--|8-------------|12------|
B|3---3---3-|5----5----5-|8-------------|12------|
G|4--4-----4|6---6-6----6|9---10--10p9--|13------|
D|5---------|7--7--------|10-9--9-----9-|14------|
A|5---------|7-----------|10-----------9|14------|
E|3---------|5-----------|8-------------|12------|
On the next part, you strum the barre chords, and only add the hammer on with your pinky before going
back to the whole barre chord.
Verse III Part III
e|3-3-5p3|5-5-7p5|8--8--10--8-----|7-7-7-7|
B|3-3-3-3|5-5-5-5|8--8--8---8-----|9-9-9-9|
G|4-4-4-4|6-6-6-6|9--9--9---9h10p9|9-9-9-9|
D|5-5-5-5|7-7-7-7|10-10-10-10-----|9-9-9-9|
A|5-5-5-5|7-7-7-7|10-10-10-10-----|7-7-7-7|
E|3-3-3-3|5-5-5-5|8--8--8---8-----|7-7-7-7|
Stylish
On the final part, you slide from one barre chord to the next (I'm not going to type out each stroke)
and hammer on and pull off of the 10th fret on the G string for the final chord. 1st chord of that measure
gets 1 full measure, hammer on gets 1/2, hammer off the other 1/2. total of 2 measures.
Verse III Part IV
e|3---|6--|7--|8--8---9-|
B|3---|6--|7--|8--8---9-|
G|4---|7--|8--|9h-10p-9-|
D|5---|8--|9--|10-10--10|
A|5---|8--|9--|10-10--10|
E|3---|6--|7--|8--8---8-|
Final chorus is simple. It's the same pattern repeated three times, but played intensely while strumming
the Cadd9
Chorus III
e|------2----|------2h3p2----|----------|
B|----2---2--|----3-------3--|3---------|
G|--0-------0|--2-----------2|0---------| x3
D|-----------|0--------------|2---------|
A|-----------|---------------|3---------|
E|3----------|---------------|----------|
And finally, the outro, which is the same as Bridge II Part I, but slows as you play.
Outro
e|----3-----3-|----3-----3-|------0-----|------0-----|
B|--3-----3---|--3-----3---|----3---3---|----3---3---|
G|------------|------------|--0-------0-|--0-------0-|
D|------------|------------|------------|------------|
A|3-----3-----|2-----2-----|------------|------------|
E|------------|------------|1-----------|0-----------|
and ends with a final standard G
e|3-----|
B|3-----|
G|0-----|
D|0-----|
A|2-----|
E|3-----|
And there you have it. For now, minus the extra work on the solo. This has taken way too long.
