I like to play the fill as: E|-3-0----------------------| B|------1-3--3/5-3--1-------| G|--------------------2--0--| It's just easier

The thing's not written out properly - as in I'm not bagging you, don't think that, but it's pretty obvious that the main riff isn't just power chords. On the recording he plays completely differently, sort of like this: e|-------------------------------0-----------------------------0-------------| B|-----------------2----2----3---0---------------2----2----3---0-------------| G|-----------------2----2----2----0h2------------2----2----2----0h2----------| D|---------------------------------------------------------------------------| A|--------------0----0------------------------0----0-------------------------| E|--------------------3---32---20-------------------3---32---20--------------| But good try though, I couldn't figure out how to play this for ages either - I used to play it exactly like you did until I realised that the riff in the verses could all be played in the first three frets.
